Glory Road
by Miss Movies
Hit - Starring Josh Lucas, Tatyana Ali, Jon Voight
In 1966, Texas Western (now University of Texas at El Paso) coach Don Haskins led the first all-black starting line-up for a college basketball team to the NCAA national championship game against powerhouse Kentucky.
If you don’t like this movie, then you simply do not have a soul. This is the best movie of 2006. I only wish it was submitted early to be in contention for the 2005 movie awards. But, I feel that this movie was brought out specifically at this particular time to remember the effects of civil rights.
Being a child of the post-civil rights era, I have never seen basketball with only white players. Watching this movie made me realize that life wasn’t always this diverse. I guess I never really thought about it before, which is sad.
The acting, the basketball choreography, and the script were all well executed. I also really enjoyed the interviews that were played during the credits (make sure to stick around).
This is a feel good movie for all ages. It is currently the best movie in movie theatres. I have been waiting a few months to see a film that I felt was worthy of spending my money on, and this is certainly the film.
Bottom Line: See it this weekend.
Drama
Rated PG for racial issues including violence and epithets, and momentary language.
Running Time: 1 hour 46 minutes.

King Kong
by Miss Movies
Miss - Starring Naomi Watts, Adrian Brody, Jack Black, Colin Hanks
King Kong is set in 1930’s New York where a young film director and his crew have decided to go to an uncharted island to shoot their latest picture. Once at their location, they discover aggitated natives, and a large beast. Push comes to shove when the natives capture the film’s leading lady to use her as a sacrifice to the animal. Now, the crew must enter the jungle to find her, and capture the beast the took her.
I think I would have liked this film better if they eliminated a few aspects. One: The natives. They really didn’t provide anything to the film aside from offering Ann Darrow (Watts) to King Kong. Two: The dinosaurs. While this island has some crazy creatures, the whole dinosaur aspect took up too much time and was a minimal part of the actual story. They could have easily played off of something a little less unrealistic. And yes, I know that a giant gorilla is unrealistic, but I find dinosaurs living in the 1930’s to be even less realistic. Three: The need to use long shots… I am talking about focusing on Naomi Watts’ face for what seems to be forever while she is looking at King Kong- we get it already, she is amazed and horrified at the same time- now cut away.
I think there is a reason this movie hasn’t been remade until know and that reason is because the movie plot sucks. Bottom Line: A spectacle but not worth your time and money.
Fantasy
Rated PG-13 for frightening adventure violence and some disturbing images.
Running time: 3 hours 7 minutes ; Philipines: 1 hour 18 minutes (why couldn’t we all see this version???)
