Rupert (Jackman) and Alfred (Bale) were once colleagues. After a freak accident, the two friends become rival magicians. The magicians are well matched until Alfred performs the ultimate trick, which causes Rupret to become obsessed with unveiling its secret.

The Prestige is another great film of 2006. This movie will have you talking long after the curtain has closed. I find this movie to be beautiful in its direction of photography as well as its ability to keep you guessing until the very end.

The direction of this movie was spectacular, the acting was superb, and the overall story was “magical.”

Bottom line: See this movie!

Mystery

Rated PG-13 for violence and disturbing images.

Running Time: 2 hours 8 minutes.

Hit - Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson, Martin Sheen, Mark Walhberg, Alec Baldwin

Two state police officers are pitted against each other when one decides to go undercover, and the other decides to tip off an Irish Mafia Boss. Violence and bloodshed uncover the truth about these men in an amazing blood-bath type ending.

This is probably the best movie I have seen this year. What is great about this film is the gritty ability to suck the audience in. It makes you feel empathetic for both the good and the bad characters. But, at the end of the movie, the audience is no longer conflicted by good or bad. What makes this movie so great is the ability to create such vivid characters within an ensemble cast. There is no denying that every aspect of this film was thought out carefully and with the intention of creating a realistic view of the Irish mafia.

The cast of this film was well matched. Leonardo DiCaprio really shows his acting “chops” in this film, proving that he indeed deserves to be nominated for an Oscar. Jack Nicholson is at his best as a familiar evil mob boss. My favorite character in the entire film is played by Mark Wahlberg. He always gives a good performance when he is playing a bad-ass good guy.

Overall: A movie that should be seen in theatres.

Drama/Crime

Rated R for strong brutal violence, pervasive language, some strong sexual content and drug material.

Running Time: 2 hours 32 minutes.

A lukewarm Hit - Starring Billy Bob Thorton, Jon Heder, Jacinda Barrett

A young man who lacks self-confidence, enrolls in a top secret class to help turn him around. He hopes the class will help him to win over a seemingly un-obtainable girl. Things turn complicated when his teacher decides to persue the same woman.

School for Scoundrels is a comedy that has its moments of laughter, moments of pain, and moments of grossness. Unfortunately, this comedy runs too long. It goes sour when you realize that the rivalry between the teacher and the student becomes about being able to out-do each other rather than being the man who wins the girl. And, although there are many short comings with this film, I still found many of the elements relatively entertaining. Overall: Wait until these scoundrels come out on video.

Comedy

Rated PG-13 for language, crude and sexual content, and some violence.

Running Time: 1 hour 40 minutes.

Miss - Starring Jason Statham, Amy Smart

Professional hitman discovers that he has been injected with a deadly poison that will kill him if his heart rate decreases.

Although this movie takes some daring special effects and directional risks, the overall plot and interest is lacking. I found myself hoping that the hitman’s heartrate would slow so I could get out of the theatre. Overall: A waste of film.

Action

Rated R for strong violence, pervasive language, sexuality, nudity and drug use.

Running Time: 1 hour 27 minutes.
