5. Snow White – The rest of the list is live action films, but this animated film takes the cake for some scary scenes. The scene where Snow White is running in the forest is particularly frightening because the trees come to life which makes it all the more creepy. Not to mention the witch changing into the scary old woman. It is absolutely frightening for children and some adults.

4. Black Hole – Released in 1979 this is the story of how a research vessel finds a missing ship, commanded by a mysterious scientist, on the edge of a black hole. – IMDB There is something wicked about the ships commander and crew. The beginning of the film is slightly cheesy as you can see the strings that are used to make the actors float in space, but as the movie leads on, you come to find that it starts to show a darker side than you imagined.

3. Something Wicked This Way Comes – I rented this movie recently because I heard that it was scary. Since it was a Disney film, I didn’t think it would be that frightening. I was wrong. This film is creepy and makes me even more scared of carnivals. Based on the book by Ray Bradbury, this film is something wicked.

2. Return to Oz – When I first rented this film as a child, I was expecting to find Dorothy continuing her adventures in the land of Oz. I never expected how dark this film would be. As a child, the darkness of the film was something I didn’t understand, but seeing it again as an adult, I realize how truly frightening this film is. While it is a well told story that could be remade, it is still extremely frightening. I can’t imagine anyone thinking the “Wheelers” are anything but scary.

1. The Watcher in the Woods – This film scares me every time I watch it. I don’t know how that is possible, but it happens. For its time, it was Disney’s biggest flop. Later, it gained a cult like following to make it more popular than when it was released. It is truly a frightening film.
